Stroll around the Olympic Ring, take the teleferic or what we call a cable car up to the castle, stop by an art museum, and finish this venture by watching the amazing performance at the Magic Fountain.
Below are some Montjuic tour details…
History
A Cursed Castle
The hill was chosen to be site for fortification of the Castell de Montjuic, thanks to its raised altitude, which was considered far from protecting the city. In fact it bombed it during the 1842 insurrection during which Barcelona rose up against the Spanish government in Madrid.
For the rest of the century and beyond, the garrison continued as a sinister symbol on high. It served as a political prison and a place of execution for dissidents like Lluis Companys, a Catalan nationalist, who was killed there by Franco’s men in 1940.
Jewish Origins
Montjuic was once the residence of the city’s Jewish community and gets its name from the Catalan meaning ‘Jewish Mountain’. It is a scenic wooded hill in the South West of Barcelona which rises 173m above sea level in between the commercial port and Plaça Espanya. In case you’re wondering how it is pronounced, it is moɲ.d͡ʒuˈik.
The International Exposition of 1929
It is highly unlikely that today’s visitor to Montjuic will feel any of these evil associations as they stroll around the mountain’s cultural treasures. The mountain is surrounded by woodland and has become one of the most attractive areas in Barcelona. The hill was chosen as the site for numerous amazing new developments at the time of the International Fair 1929.
And Finally…The Olympics!
The Olympic Stadium was also built around the time. It was constructed for the 1936 Games, however, Barcelona lost out to Berlin. Followed by this event, there were plans to stage an anti-fascist game in their place but the Spanish Civil War put an end to even that.
