Located next to the basilica in St. Mark’s Square which overlooks the Grand Canal, the Doge’s Palace or Palazzo Ducale was the old seat of the government of Venice and is famous throughout the world. This is famously known as the residence of the Doge of Venice. Its monumental colonnade of inlaid marbles which has rooms concealing a plethora of treasures and Venetian-Gothic large ogival windows are a façade enchanting visitors from all over the globe. Basics

This palace is a significant historical site in all of Venice. Many travelers arrive here to learn about the strict rule of the Venice Doges from an expert local tour guide. This location is most commonly visited on a two-to-five hour tour. It can also be combined with a tour to St. Mark’s Basilica which was once the private chapel f the Doges. Inside the Doges Palace you will find many paintings by Veronese, Tintoretto, and Titan. You will find beautiful columns along the piazetta and the Bridge of Sighs outside the palace.

History

Outside the palace, between the 9th and 10th columns, death sentences were declared. On the other hand, executions were carried out between the freestanding columns in the piazetta which is next to the lagoon. Even in today’s time, Venetians won’t dare to walk between them. In case the accused were able to walk around the edge of the third column based on the seaward side of the palace, a final chance at life was offered.
