St. Peter’s Basilica
St. Peters Basilica is one of the largest churches in the world and is constructed over the tomb of Saint Peter.
Today’s standing Basilica was constructed on top of the earlier 4th-century church (covering Peter’s Tomb) and was completed in the 17th century. Basilica took more than 120 years to complete and is a treasure trove of history.

Its a Basilica so you have to wear appropriate clothes and once reach inside you’ll see Bernini’s works which includes the Chapel of the Sacrament, the baldachin, the plan for the niches and open loggias in the piers of the dome and the chair of St. Peter.
St. Peter’s Square
Designed and built by Bernini in 17th century, St. Peters Square is a large plaza and the main entrance to basilica and Vatican City. Divided into two parts, Square is 240 meters wide and 320 meters long.
Bernini has given an effect that would honor “the matrix of all the churches”. There are 140 sculptures of saints along the balustrade including statues of Saint Paul and Saint Peter, two majestic fountains and Michelangelo’s Pieta, a wide promenade leading to the basilica.
Royal Staircase that lead to the Vatican Palaces attracts the visitors a lot. It is 60 meters high, but due to the progressive narrow size of the width as it goes up, it looks impressively longer and deeper.
The Sisitine Chapel
Constructed between 1473 and 1481 the Sistine Chapel is truly an outstanding sight for frescoes. It was built and used to serve as the pope’s private chapel and the venue to elect new popes by cardinals.
Sistine Chapel is a popular and famous tourist attraction in Vatican City for its frescoes which includes Michelangelo’s fresco art on the ceiling and behind the altar. Frescoes decorated on walls are from artists like Ghirlandaio, Roselli, Botticelli and Perugino.
Frescoes portrays Old Testament stories on the ceiling and behind the altar is The Last Judgement which represents the second coming of Christ and the Day of Judgement.

In the gardens, you’ll find the Vatican Radio Station, medieval fortifications, Our Lady of Lourdes grotto, numerous sculptures, fountains and stunning monuments and buildings which drag you back to 9th century history.
