History of the Grand Palace

The Grand Palace holds great significance and is a magnificent complex of buildings. In the year 1782, construction of the complex began. That happened there was a decision taken by King Rama I to move the capital of Thailand from Thonburi to another area which was known as the Rattanakosin island. It located on the East side of the Chao Phraya river.

Surrounded by 1,900 meters long walls, this complex houses the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the throne halls among others Royal residences. It also became the center of the Kingdom by accommodating the Royal Court and the center of government.

The surrounding galleries

You will find the Royal Monastery surrounded by walls that cover with very detailed and beautiful paintings of the Ramakien (the Thai version of the Indian epic Ramayana). It knows that large parts of the Ramakien wrote by King Rama I and King Rama II. Many of these paintings tell stories about the battle between good and evil. When the palace built in the 18thcentury, they first created and since then have been restored several times.

Dress code

Please follow the dress code as this is a sacred place. That means that you cannot wear short pants, shirts without sleeves, or walk with shoes on inside. As it requires in any temple in Thailand, that shoes must be taken off. There is a booth by the complex near the entrance of the Palace, where proper clothes provide if needed in Grand Palace Tour.

Taking photos and video equipment is allowed in most parts of the Grand Palace, but not inside the Wat Phra Kaew temple.

The Grand Palace’s location is in the old Rattanakosin area of Bangkok. It bases on the East bank of the Chao Phraya river. Right next to it you’ll find the Wat Pho, which is the temple holding the 46 meters reclining Buddha.

The most fun and easiest way to get there is by taking the Chao Phraya express boat. Either you can get off at Tha Chang pier on the Northern end or the Tha Tien pier on the Southern end of the Palace complex.

Opening hours & entrance fees

The palace opens daily from 8:30 am and closes till 3:30 pm. It is very rare that the castle closes as it uses for official state functions.

The Entrance fee you’ll have to pay is 500 Thai Baht per person.

Clothing can be rented at the entrance in case you show up in sleeveless or shirts short pants. It will cost you 200 Thai Baht per person.
